Mapisa-nqakula Corruption Case Postponed To January 2025

The corruption case involving former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has been postponed to 20 January 2025.

The postponement follows the late filing of heads of argument by Mapisa-Nqakulas defence, which the state argued left insufficient time to prepare its response.

The defence has also requested further disclosure of sections B and C of the docket, which include correspondence and the investigation diary.

State Prosecutor Advocate Bheki Manyathi explained the delay, saying, "The applicant filed heads of argument on Monday, the 2nd of December. They consist of 133 pages, and reference is made to 128 decided cases and eight legal publications. So the heads themselves, in the states view, are voluminous, coupled with the legal authorities referred to. As a result of that, the state indicated on Tuesday, the 3rd, that it is highly unlikely that it would have read all the case law authorities and be ready to argue the matter today."

The court will reconvene in January to address the outstanding issues.
