Following the arrest of seven police officers in KwaZulu -Natal, on charges of corruption, the issue of criminality within the South African Police Service (SAPS) has come to the fore again.

While Parliaments Police Portfolio Committee commended the SAPS for targeting corrupt members, it added that a lot more needs to be done to rid the service of these officials.

But, Don Gold, a former SAPS member who studies policing methods and criminality globally, says the overwhelming majority of SAPS members want to serve their communities .

I think the vast majority of law enforcement officers in SAPS and I think in any other law enforcement agency in this country, are really trying to do a good job and they want to do better. Of course there are pockets of excellence within the police service that are trying to do their best for the country and for you the public, adds Gold.
