Maile Proposes State Of Emergency Over Food Poisonings
The Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile has proposed that a state of emergency may be necessary to address the rising number of fatalities linked to suspected food contamination cases from spaza shops.
This follows 10-year-old girl, Lesedi Maboi dying after consuming snacks bought from a local spaza shop over the weekend. The girls mother and four-year old sibling were hospitalized after consuming the same snacks and are now in a stable condition.
He says drastic measures need to be taken to prevent more deaths.
He says law enforcement should be held accountable for the continued lawlessness by some spaza shop owners. Maile is calling for greater accountability.
We should not just talk about these things. That is why we are saying law enforcement agencies must be held accountable, we need to get numbers. How many shops are you visiting, are you inspecting, what are you finding?
