The M23 rebels have captured Kasugho, a town in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo DRC, after defeating government forces in a recent battle. Hundreds of residents have fled the town of Kasugho, which is close to a gold mining site and a game reserve.
The rebels have seized several towns and villages since 2021 and displaced more than 2 million people.
The M23 rebels have continued their offensive in the eastern DRC province of North Kivu after a lull in fighting. They seized the town of Kasugho from government forces and their allied militia in recent clashes.
The town is located between a gorilla game reserve and a gold-mining site. It has routes that lead to the city of Butembo, an important trade hub.
Uganda has deployed soldiers near the town to protect traders in the region and its border with the DRC.
