Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has told Parliament that the Lusikisiki massacre appears to have been coordinated from within a prison. While briefing the Police Portfolio Committee, he highlights that Lusikisiki has been a den of criminal activity for more than a year.
Mchunu says four suspects have been arrested , and theyre waiting for the fifth to hand himself over to authorities. While another, also linked to the crime, who is the suspected mastermind, is already serving time in prison.
The Police Minister has told MPs that help came swiftly from the public after the SAPS publicised images of the accused.
One, a parolee, has already appeared in court. Three others were arrested on Tuesday, and the fifth is expected to hand himself over to the police. But it doesnt end there.
"But we know that we still are sitting with the so-called mastermind who is in prison, who we have been avoiding in terms of arrests but its a matter of that being processed and in due course he will join the others. We have no doubt in our IND that he is directly involved. And the shock that is going to visit us as South Africans is that somebody sitting in prison could actually have coordinated these murders," says Mchunu.
