The National Sea Rescue Institute NSRI successfully rescued four people on Saturday afternoon after their small cabin ski-boat capsized off the coast between Vermont and Hawston, Hermanus, reports Cape town Etc .

The group, which included a 49-year-old father and his teenage son from Somerset West, as well as two male friends, both aged 14, from Stellenbosch, had been stranded in the water for over seven hours before being spotted by local anglers.

NSRI Hermanus duty crew were recovering their rescue craft from a routine training exercise when multiple eyewitness reports came in at around 12:40pm about a boat overturned offshore, with people clinging to the hull.

On arrival, rescuers found the four hanging onto their upturned boat. The 17-year-old son was slipping in and out of consciousness, while his father had also sustained injuries. All four were brought aboard the rescue craft, where they were treated for hypothermia before being taken to the NSRI base.

EMS paramedics met them on arrival and transported them to hospital in serious condition. They are now recovering and expected to make a full recovery.
