Life Esidimeni Victims Families Want Justice To Prevail

Families of mental healthcare patients who died during the Life Esidimeni tragedy want the prosecution of former health MEC Qedani Mahlangu and former Director of Mental Health in Gauteng, Dr Makgabo Manamela to be prioritised.

The families are picketing at the National Prosecuting Authority NPA offices in Pretoria.

In July, the Life Esidimeni Inquest found that the deaths of nine patients were unnatural and a result of Mahlangu and Manamelas decision to move patients from Life Esidimeni to ill-equipped and unlicensed NGOs.

A total of 144 people died as a result.

NGO Section 27s executive director and lawyer for the victims families, Sasha Stevenson says the NPA has not been communicating with the families regarding progress on the matter.
