legends lamb chops and laughter collide at karoo art hotel

There's something magical about Barrydale in winter. And from 18 to 20 July, the quiet Karoo town is set to erupt with laughter, live music, and sizzling braais as the Karoo Art Hotel hosts its third 5 Arts Weekend - a raucous celebration of everything South Africans love: sport, stories, music, meat, and mischief, Cape town Etc reports.

At the heart of the madness is John Dobson, the beloved and bold Stormers head coach turned part-time party conductor. Back in Barrydale as the hotel's 'Creative Conductor', Dobbo is curating another unforgettable weekend, and this time, he's bringing some heavy-hitting friends along for the ride.

The lineup reads like a dream team of local legends. Expect fire and feeling from rock rebel Francois van Coke, hard-hitting rugby insights from Steven Kitshoff, Mark Keohane, and John Maytham, and plenty of cheeky banter and belly laughs from comedian Pieter G. And when the stars go down, the volume goes up - thanks to a legendary Saturday-night party with DJ Jaco Messenheimer spinning under Karoo skies.

So, what's on the menu? Everything. Literally.

  • The Art of Music - Francois van Coke kicks things off with a live show on Friday night. Dinner included, and yes, there's a veg option.
  • The Art of a Chilled Cycle - Join Dobbo and crew on a relaxed Saturday ride through the countryside. BYOB: Bring Your Own Bike.
  • he Art of Rugby - A fireside masterclass with rugby greats Dobson, Kitshoff, Keohane and Maytham, with a big-screen screening of SA vs Georgia to boot.
  • The Art of the Braai - Lunch is a feast fit for kings: skilpadjies, Karoo chops, braaibroodjies and more.
  • The Art of Comedy - Pieter G takes the stage with a dose of local humour.
  • The Art of the Party - End the weekend with DJ Jaco bringing the beats at the iconic Harleydale dancefloor.

This isn't just another weekend in the countryside - it's a full sensory experience where culture meets chaos, and laughter meets lamb chops. Whether you're a rugby nut, a music fan, or just craving a getaway with real South African soul, this is the kind of event that leaves you smiling all the way back to the city.
