The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed that seven learners from Bongucele Secondary School in Mthwalume on the South Coast of the province, have been treated at a clinic for alleged food poisoning, after consuming snacks at a nearby tuckshop.
The Department says the pupils were suffering from diarrhea and vomiting and were taken to the clinic to be treated. Six of the learners have been discharged whilst the 7th, who is pregnant is being kept for observation.
The incident comes after six learners from Naledi in Soweto, Gauteng, died of food poisoning after allegedly consuming snacks at a spaza shop.
Provincial Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says, Regarding the issue of food poisoning or learners from Bongucele Secondary School in Mthwalume, there are seven not 80. Six of them have been released. One has been kept, who is pregnant, for further medical observation.
