Kyoto To Hike Tourist Tax
The ancient Japanese city of Kyoto has announced that it is hiking its tourist tax in 2026.
Currently, guests pay JPY200 R24 per person per night for a room costing less than JPY20000 R2438 JPY500 R60 for rooms priced up to JPY49 999 R6095 and JPY1000 R120 for rooms that cost JPY50 000 R6095 or more.
Kyoto city officials have said they will implement five-tier tax rates next year.
Guests will pay JPY200pppn R24 for a stay costing less than JPY5000 R610, and a maximum of JPY10 000 R1220 for accommodation costing JPY100 000 R12190 or more.
The citys government expects the new fees to double revenue to tackle overtourism issues.
