kariega residents remain displaced following floods

Flood displaced residents of Kariega in the Nelson Mandela Metro in the Eastern Cape say they are still suffering from the effects of being displaced earlier this year.

More than 50 families were moved by the municipality from the flood-prone Lapland area, to temporary structures in a different part of Kariega.

The residents are highlighting sanitation as the main issue they face. They say the temporary toilets they were provided with are not being maintained by the municipality.

Community member, Ernelene Reed says this lack of proper sanitation poses serious health risks.

Some of our children get infections, there is a bad smell when you open the door. You can smell how bad it is inside of your house even when you turn right or left you can smell it. We want them to come and clean the toilets because we have been trying for weeks now for assistance but no answer.
