Just Under 100 Police Officers Dismissed In Western Cape

Just under a hundred police officers were dismissed from the service in the Western Cape over the past two years. Thats the revelation by Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, to a Parliamentary reply to a question raised by the DA.

The total number of people who were dismissed was 97 between January 2023 and December 2024 in the Western Cape.

This translates to about four dismissals a month in the province for the period under review.

The charges range from, amongst others, murder, attempted murder, assault, robbery, extortion, corruption, fraud, theft, burglary, sexual offences, drug offences, and being under the influence of alcohol while on duty.

Meanwhile, South African police officers are set to be equipped with body-worn cameras from the next financial year, if the budget permits. While SAPS has targeted to rollout bodycams for its members in the next financial year, this will be dependent on the availability of funding given the competing priorities within SAPS.
