jra threatens to terminate lilian ngoyi st rehabilitation contract

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has issued a notice of intent to terminate the contract of the contractor appointed to rehabilitate Lilian Ngoyi Street , formerly Bree Street.

This follows concerns over delays and lack of progress in the rehabilitation project. The road caved in after an explosion in August 2023, which killed one person and injured several others.

The City of Johannesburgs investigation found methane gas to be the cause of the explosion.

Rehabilitation work began in February 2024 and was divided into two phases covering 1.8 kilometres from Ntemi Piliso Street to End Street.

The first phase focused on a 450-meter segment, involving the reconstruction of underground services, reinforcing the concrete channel, and installing street furniture.
