Johannesburg Boosts Green Infrastructure To Combat Climate Change
The City of Johannesburg says it has already taken steps towards establishing a comprehensive Climate Action Plan by planting trees around the City. Speaking at a four-day summit on Urban Forestry in Bryanston, north of Johannesburg, Executive Mayor Dada Morero says these initiatives focus on restoring vital ecosystems, removing invasive species, and expanding green infrastructure to enhance resilience to climate change. The summit brings together stakeholders from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, experts and scholars to discuss sustainable Urban greening solutions. Morero highlights the citys plans to uplift Urban Forestry. As part of this commitment, urban forests and green spaces are integral to our Climate Action Plan. They help combat heatwaves, flooding, and other climate-related challenges disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. In areas such as Soweto, Alexandra, Ivory Park, and Diepsloot, where the urban heat island effect is most pronounced, urban forests are essential for reducing heat stress and improving the quality of life for residents.
