The arrest of four suspects associated with a construction mafia in Marshalltown has halted their alleged extortion and intimidation tactics at a construction site, thanks to the quick and decisive action by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

On September 9, JMPD CCTV Reaction officers reacted to reports of extortion at a Total Garage construction site on the corner of Simmonds and Thorpe streets in Marshalltown.

The individuals, who allegedly blocked the entrance with a grey Mercedes Benz and demanded R1,000 every day from construction workers, were quickly arrested and accused of extortion, intimidation, and public violence.

The suspects allegedly demanded that their preferred workers from Ward 124 should be employed. However, the claim was disputed by the property owner who denied any agreement with the suspects about employment.

Superintendent Xolani Fihla has praised the JMPDs prompt response, saying that the City of Johannesburg is dedicated to eliminating criminal groups' influence and ensuring a secure environment for businesses and construction projects in the city. Our firm response today shows that we will not accept any kind of extortion or intimidation.
