Jimmy Matthews, the son of the late renowned struggle poet and writer, James Matthews says his father was consistent in influencing generations of young people.
The internationally acclaimed poet and writer died on Saturday in his sleep in Cape Town at the age of 95.
He started working as a journalist and wrote for a variety of publications, including the Golden City Post, the Cape Times and Drum Magazine. He also served as the de facto news editor of the Muslim News newspaper in Cape Town.
Matthews says his father always listened to the youth and took inspiration from the struggles of young people.
He was very involved with high school students and supported everything they did. In the same way, offered refuge to those who needed it. And with the Fees Must Fall Movement, he was very supportive and was on campus a lot. So, he was consistent in associating and supporting young people.
