Jet Set Club Death Toll Nears 200 As Rescue Efforts End In Dominican Republic

Disaster struck in the early hours of Tuesday morning when the roof of Santo Domingos iconic Jet Set night nightclub collapsed, leaving at least 184 people killed and over 200 injured, reports Cape town Etc .

Politicians, athletes and a fashion designer form part of the crowd that was crushed when the roof fell in the Dominican capital, nearly an hour after the merengue concert headed by Latin American singer Rubby Perez began at the club.

Jet Set was renowned for its Monday night merengue parties, which often saw the likes of international celebrities and high-profile Dominicans joining the festivities over its 50 years of operation, according to AP News .

Video footage showing moments before parts of the roof collapsed as well as rescuers combing through the wreckage within the large hole where the clubs roof once was has been circulating on various social media platforms.

Though the exact number remains unclear, local media reports estimated that between 500 and 1 000 people were in the club when the catastrophic collapse occurred.
