It Is Official Cadillac Joining In 2026 As F1s 11th Team
Cadillac will officially join the Formula 1 grid in 2026, becoming the eleventh team in the championship after a significant announcement by F1's owners on Monday, 25 November. This decision follows months of discussions between Formula 1, General Motors GM, and their partners at TWG Global, culminating in an "agreement in principle" to bring Cadillac into the sport.
While the full details of the teams structure are still emerging, Formula 1 confirmed that Cadillac will initially enter as a team branded with GM's iconic name. The teams cars will be powered by Ferrari engines, with plans for GM to develop its own engines at a later stage. This marks a major milestone in GMs motorsport ambitions, as the company also registered to become an engine supplier for Formula 1 starting in 2028.
The announcement comes after Formula 1 had rejected the bid from Andretti Autosport earlier this year, which was also backed by GM. Initially, Andretti, led by Michael Andretti, had hoped to enter Formula 1 with Cadillac's support. However, Andrettis involvement has since been dropped, with Mario Andretti, the 1978 World Champion, reportedly taking on an ambassadorial role instead.
GM President Mark Reuss expressed excitement over the move, emphasizing that it is an honor for Cadillac to join the worlds premier racing series and reaffirming their commitment to the sport.
F1s increasing interest in the U.S. market is evident, with the sport adding multiple races in the U.S., including the Las Vegas Grand Prix. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who had supported Andrettis original bid, also welcomed Cadillacs arrival, stating his full support for the collaboration between GM, F1, and the FIA.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali hailed the announcement as a significant step forward, emphasizing that it highlights the sports ongoing evolution and growth.
