Investigation Reveals Negligence In George Building Collapse

Following the tragic collapse of a residential building in George that resulted in 34 fatalities, Minister Thembisile Simelane outlines the investigations findings , highlighting systemic failures and the need for accountability among implicated officials.

During her presentation to the Department of Human Settlements DHS portfolio committee, Simelane unveiled a report detailing the investigation, which was submitted on the 26th of March, reports Cape town Etc .

It highlighted the collapse of the building on Victoria Street in the Dormehls Drift suburb on May 6, 2024, as an avoidable tragedy brought about by negligence at multiple levels.

The investigations findings strongly implicate officials from the National Home Builders Registration Council NHBRC and the contractor overseeing the project.

Key issues identified include irregular status upliftment, tardy enrolment in regulatory processes, significant lapses in inspections and blatant violations of safety standards. Worryingly, material quality issues were also flagged, showcasing a multifaceted failure of internal controls and supervisor accountability within the NHBRC.
