Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale says the department has launched an investigation into allegations of corrupt correctional service officials, who are believed to be giving unauthorized private hospital passes to wealthy prisoners in KwaZulu-Natal.

It is alleged that these are prisoners are serving time at the Durban Westville Prison and New Prison in Pietermaritzburg.

Thobakgale elaborates further on the investigations.

It has caused a lot of stir in the media space. We are not supposed to be treating offenders differently. There are rules, we have a standard operating procedures, we also follow the correctional services act, and we have to comply with the constitution. So that investigation is basically meant to ensure that if there is in any case instance where the standard operating procedures were not followed below was not adhere to as a department.
