Improvement In Maize Production Expected Due To Excellent Rains

Agricultural analysts expect an improvement in maize production due to excellent rains received over the summer season. This follows a difficult season of poor rains in the previous year. According to the latest Crop Estimates Committee report, the expected commercial maize crop has increased by 8,26 compared to the previous season.

Crop Estimates Committee released the countrys first summer crop production forecast for the 2024/25 season. The committee forecast that grains will increase from the previous season.

According to the report, white maize will see an increase of over 22 tons, which is more than what was produced last season.

Analysts say the figures indicate a recovery in the agricultural sector.

"This will likely be a recovery season for South Africa's agricultural sector. We have received excellent rains following a very difficult season in their 2023 and 2024 production year where we saw the overall. Grain production declined by roughly 21. This time around, though, the crop estimate committee has come out with a promising figure where they place their overall grain production at over 17 000 000 tons. That is up double digit from where we were last year," says Wandile Sihlobo, Chief Economist: Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa.
