The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ICANN has launched the Applicant Support Program ASP as part of its "Next Round" initiative for the New Generic Top-Level Domains gTLD program. This program provides an opportunity for organizations with fewer resources to apply for and secure new gTLDs, which are the domain extensions that appear after the dot in an internet address e.g., .org, .com.
The Next Round initiative is the first opportunity since 2012 for entities to apply for gTLDs, including those that are longer than three characters or in non-Latin scripts. This effort reflects ICANNs goal to expand the number of gTLDs available and help classify the vast and diverse array of online entities. While the process of applying for a gTLD can be expensive and complex, the ASP aims to make this more accessible by offering a reduction of 75-85 in evaluation fees, along with access to pro bono services, training, and other resources.
The program is designed for applicants that may have financial constraints but still wish to operate a gTLD. Eligible applicants must meet specific financial criteria and belong to one of the following categories nonprofits, charities, intergovernmental organizations, indigenous or tribal peoples' organizations, social impact businesses, small businesses from less-developed economies, and others with similar needs.
ICANN's Vice President for Africa, Pierre Dandjinou, emphasized that the program aims to encourage innovation and competition, offering new opportunities for businesses, communities, and organizations to develop gTLDs that reflect their culture, language, and business goals. This move aligns with ICANNs broader mission to enhance the diversity and inclusivity of the domain name space.
