Hydropower: Africa's Untapped Energy 'gold Mine'

Despite possessing significant hydropower potential, Africa remains plagued by inadequate energy access. Hydropower currently accounts for 40 of sub-Saharan Africas electricity generation. Installed capacity was 42 GW in 2023 yet harnessing this vast resource remains challenging. In an exclusive interview with Energize, Colin Logan, Managing Director of GIBB Investment Holdings, an affiliated entity of the engineering consultancy, says hydropower is essential to meet Africas growing energy demands but warns there are barriers to unlocking its potential.
