Hospital Urges Sun Safety This Holiday Season
Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape has urged the public to be vigilant about sun protection especially during the hot holiday season.
A dermatologist at Tygerberg Hospital, Barbara van der Westhuizen, says they treat about a thousand skin cancer patients annually. She says skin cancer remains a significant health concern, but early detection and treatment offer a high cure rate.
Van der Westhuizen says it is important to create public awareness.
As December marks the beginning of Skin Cancer awareness season, Van der Westhuizen has advised the public to go for regular skin checks for new growths or changes and stresses the importance of preventative measures such as sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoiding sunburn.
It is also encouraged to seek medical advice promptly if they notice any concerning skin changes.
