Higher Education Clamping Down On Bogus Institutions: Gondwe

Deputy Higher Education Minister Mimmy Gondwe says the department is clamping down on unregistered educational institutions that exploit vulnerable students seeking affordable education in South Africa.
Gondwe is visiting such colleges and private institutions of higher education in the Durban CBD in KwaZulu-Natal which has the second highest concentration of tertiary students in the country.
She says her department is receiving complaints about unregistered institutions from across the country.
Gondwe says they are declaring war on unregistered institutions that rob people of their money, time and the opportunity of getting a job.
We keep two registers - one for private colleges and one for private institutions for higher education. We also encourage parents and learners alike to do their due diligence and homework because it can go a long way towards ensuring that you dont lose out on money, and you dont lose out on opportunities to gaining a legitimate qualification and ultimately gaining employment. Sometimes, they can even walk into a college that we did today to come and check if registration certificates are displayed are if the accreditation details displayed, and to speak to the learners.
