South African motorists are in for some relief as fuel prices are set to decrease significantly from Wednesday, 2 April 2025.

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has confirmed a sharp drop in petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin prices following shifts in global oil markets and a stronger rand.

Petrol prices will fall by 58 cents per litre for 93 octane and 72 cents per litre for 95 octane. Diesel will see an even larger reduction, with wholesale prices dropping by up to 86 cents per litre. Illuminating paraffin and LPGAS will also become cheaper, easing the financial burden on households.

The decline comes after global oil prices tumbled from 74.89 to 71.04 per barrel due to increased supply from non-OPEC nations and expectations of further production hikes from OPEC members. The rand's appreciation against the dollar further contributed to the price cuts, with the currency strengthening from R18.50/ to R18.30/.

Despite the welcome decrease, tax adjustments announced in the March Budget Speech will slightly impact fuel levies. The carbon fuel levy will rise by 3 cents per litre, bringing total fuel levies to 399 c/l for petrol and 387 c/l for diesel. The Road Accident Fund Levy and general fuel levy, however, will remain unchanged.
