Major national roads leading into Gauteng are expected to be heavily congested starting Sunday until next week as schools will be re-opening for the last term.

The routes used by travelers as they return to the Province include the N1 from Polokwane, the N1 from Free State, the N1 from Mpumalanga and the N3 from KZN.

The routes are expected to carry 1 000 to 8500 00 vehicles per hour at toll plazas later on Sunday.

Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Obed Sibasa says traffic officials have been deployed to some routes that are expected to have a high volume of vehicles.

Gauteng road safety promotion urges drivers to buckle up, keep to the same following distance and speed, drive with headlights on to increase visibility and take regular rest breaks every two hours or 200 kilometers. Do not drink and drive and avoid unsafe and overt lane changing, which leads to head-on collisions that are mostly fatal. Gauteng traffic police and other law enforcement agencies have mounted roadblocks, block patrols, stop and search, including visible patrolling and a zero-tolerance approach.
