gugulethu club mobilises athletics community for fanconi anaemia patient

In an inspiring show of solidarity, the RCS Gugulethu Athletics Club has rallied the athletics community to come together for an urgent cause: finding a matching stem cell donor to save the life of one of their youngest fans, 13-year-old Linemihle.

Diagnosed with Fanconi Anaemia last year, Linemihles best chance at survival lies in securing a blood stem cell match, a mission that the club has championed during the Two Oceans Marathon TOM, Cape town Etc reports.

With the TOM being one of South Africas most cherished running events, the Gugulethu-based athletics club seized the opportunity to reach out to attendees, urging them to register as stem cell donors.

Chairperson of RCS Gugulethu Athletics Club Aubrey Shoko said, While we are rooted in Gugulethu and actively cultivating meaningful connections in the community, our channels for raising awareness about blood cancer and disorders extend beyond our immediate surroundings. These health issues affect all of us regardless of our social status.

Fanconi Anaemia, a rare blood disorder affecting approximately 1 in 160 000 individuals globally, impairs the bone marrow and can lead to severe health complications.
