Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen says his department is committed to dealing with the food insecurity faced by more than half of South African households.
The Minister was speaking during the World Food Day event held at Delpoortshoop in the Northern Cape. The day is observed under the theme right to foods for a better life and better future.
Steenhuisen says ensuring that South Africans have food on the table would need the collaboration of the government and the private sector.
These things are a knock-on effect further down the economy. We have already spoken about the effect on the health system of the lack of a nutritious diet. So, that is why I believe the report is fundamentally important to ensuring that we become a much more food secure country than we currently are.
