The steel industry is currently grappling with several critical challenges that require immediate attention to prevent them from escalating into more costly or potentially irreversible problems.

In response, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition DTIC has called on industry stakeholders to submit their views on identifying the key issues and recommending necessary interventions.

This follows recent discussions with Minister Parks Tau, aimed at reaching an agreement on how the sector can be supported.

The submissions should also outline long-term growth objectives for the industry and establish clear criteria for measuring success.

Policy Concerns

Lucio Trentini, CEO of the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa SEIFSA, has pointed to the lack of a comprehensive and well-thought-out industrial policy for the metals sector as a key driver of the industry's decline.

"To date, policy responses have often been poorly designed or fragmented, failing to consider the full value chain implications," Trentini explained.
