govan mbeki municipality probes controversial licenses payments

The Govan Mbeki Local Municipality in Mpumalanga, says that it is investigating a payment of R160 000 to help the Mpumalanga Municipality upgrade the driving licenses of just four employees.

This follows the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the province demanding answers about why R40 000 was paid per person, compared to the standard rate of R6 000 normally paid by the municipality.

The Municipalitys executive mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma says the council was astonished by the said payment.

As a council we were surprised by the news that there was a R160 000 spent on the upskilling of employees- in terms of license to operate some of the plant that we have bought. Unfortunately, we are not experts in terms of understanding as to what is the pricing- and so we have since instructed the municipal manager to institute an investigation whether there was value for money for such, because it looks very exorbitant.
