Gogta Urged To Reconsider Cwp Retrenchments

Civic movement Save South Africa says Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa should reconsider the retrenchment of workers aged 55 and above.

Recently, the department announced that it would terminate Community Work Programme CWP contracts for people aged 55 and older due to some issues including budget cuts.

The CWP is a government program that provides temporary employment for unemployed people of working age while they search for permanent or more stable jobs.

The civic movements spokesperson, Tebogo Mashilompane, says the decision shows a lack of planning.

We view this as a lack of timing and lack of proper planning. January is a crucial time for many South Africans, especially those who are underpaid and underemployed like community workers. One of the biggest challenges about this termination of contracts for this specified age is that we all know that a person of 55 years is highly likely unemployable at that age and sadly, the very same person was receiving a slave stipend that did not even allow him or her to save for the future.
