Ghana Heads To The Polls Amid Deepening Economic Crisis
Ghana, once one of Africa's economic powerhouses, is currently grappling with a severe cost-of-living crisis and high inflation. As millions of Ghanaians head to the polls for a presidential election on Saturday, the campaign has largely been shaped by what many consider to be the worst economic crisis the country has faced in a generation.
Twelve candidates are vying to succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo. The two main contenders are Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, representing the ruling New Patriotic Party NPP, and former President John Mahama, from the National Democratic Congress NDC. Additionally, two fringe candidates are running as independents: former trade and industry minister Alan Kyerematen, among others. The election is seen as a critical moment for Ghana, as voters seek leadership that can address the country's economic challenges.
