Gauteng provincial government and City of Johannesburg officials conducted raids on spaza shops in Diepkloof, Soweto on Tuesday afternoon. They seized large quantities of expired and poorly labelled goods.
The raids were initiated to ensure compliance with health, safety, and consumer protection standards, following the tragic deaths of two children in the area last week due to foodborne illnesses.
Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko announced plans to increase the number of environmental health inspectors to enhance compliance checks at spaza shops. She emphasized the need for more personnel to effectively monitor the numerous spaza shops in the province.
