The Gauteng Health Department says it is busy rolling out a programme of refurbishment for all public hospitals.
This is partly in response to a viral video that a patient posted on social media which exposed dilapidated conditions at the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg, where a patient was admitted.
In the video, former broadcaster Tom London describes the conditions as deplorable and accused medical staff of showing a lack of compassion.

Department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says, "The infrastructure issues are something that we have long acknowledged, and we outlined a programme of maintenance and refurbishment that we are currently rolling out in the very same facility that were talking about. Just about three months ago, we opened a newly refurbished emergency unit, which is now being expanded as part of the programme that we are currently having. So, of course, the facilities which there would be areas like the one where the ward where the gentleman was at, require certain work to be done there.
