Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela intends to invoke the National Land Transport Act as a measure to deal with escalating taxi violence incidents.

Section 91 of the Act empowers the MEC to suspend taxi operations by closing the ranks or routes or revoking or amending operating licences.

This follows a fatal shooting of three officials from the Soweto taxi group, the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association Wata, in Mofolo on Monday.

Last month alone, 11 taxi operators were gunned down in Katlehong on the East Rand.

Diale-Tlabela says those behind the Soweto killings must be apprehended.
