Garden Route Lake Closure Extended As Algal Bloom Persists

South African National Parks SANParks has extended the closure of Island Lake, in the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park, due to ongoing blue-green algal bloom. The lake has been closed since March7.

In a press statement, SANParks said recent test results confirmed the continued presence of potentially harmful cyanobacteria in the lake. Satellite images captured on April3 show the extent of the bloom remains contained within the lake.

Island Lake will remain closed to the public until SANParks declares it safe for recreational use. Authorities continue to monitor the bloom and are analysing available data to inform their response and ensure public safety, SANParks stated.

Island Lake offers a variety of tourist activities such as kayaking, canoeing, swimming, birdwatching and picnicking.

Environmental factors contributing to algal bloom include warmer temperatures, decaying organic matter, accelerated nutrient cycling and changes in freshwater flow.
