Former Springbok Lock, Coach John Williams Has Died

Former Springbok lock and the first national coach post isolation, John Williams, has died in a Pretoria hospital after being in a coma for the past 10 days.

Williams was a star-player for the Blue Bulls in the 1970s and played 13 test matches for the Springboks during that period.

He was appointed Springbok coach in 1992 after a successful stint as Blue Bulls coach during which they won the Currie Cup in 1987, 1988 and 1991.

But after winning just one of his five matches in charge of the Springboks, he was replaced by Ian McIntosh.

He was 78-years old.
