On Friday, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu officially opened the upgraded runway at Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Ebonyi State. She was in the state to attend the grand finale of the annual Ebonyi Women's Day Celebration. During the commissioning, Tinubu praised Governor Francis Nwifuru for the impressive airport, describing it as a world-class facility. She also acknowledged the Governor's gender-inclusive approach to appointments and expressed her appreciation for the state's progress, comparing the runway favorably to those in other countries.
Governor Nwifuru expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support in upgrading the runway. He explained that the airport had initially been built with concrete, which was not suitable for aviation, leading to its temporary closure by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. With federal assistance, the runway was rebuilt to meet aviation standards.
Tinubu was welcomed by several dignitaries, including Vice Presidents wife, Hajia Nana Shetima, and the wives of various state governors. After the inauguration, she joined local women in a cultural performance. Aviation Commissioner Ngozi Obichukwu announced that commercial flights would begin at the airport next month, with all logistical challenges having been resolved by the state government.
