Fear Grips Residents At Informal Settlement In Lamontville Amid Rains

Residents of the Gwala Street Transit Camp in Lamontville in Durban have been battered by heavy rains yet again.
Last month, the area was among the worst affected, with some residents drowning in the nearby river.
Speaking about last nights rains, residents Sanelisiwe Gcume and Bulelwa Ncinca say they got through the night in fear again.
They have reiterated calls to be relocated to safer land.
We are living in fear, we hardly sleep at night, we are scared, we did not sleep until the rain stopped. We are still waiting for the municipality to relocate us they promised to move us away from this place. We are not safe in this place, we are still traumatised after people lost their lives in the previous floods, we could not sleep at night, we decided to pack important documents and uniform for school children in case we had to move out to a safer place.
