Fda Plans To Limit Nicotine Levels In Cigarettes

The South African Medical Research Council has hailed the US Food and Drug Administrations FDA announcement of a groundbreaking plan to limit nicotine levels in cigarettes to minimal or non-addictive levels.

If implemented, the move would make the US the first country to take such drastic action to combat smoking-related diseases and deaths.

The proposed rule would cap nicotine levels in cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Senior Specialist Scientist at the South African Medical Research Council Dr. Catherine Egbe says a ban on flavoured nicotine products would also go a long way in combating nicotine addiction.

At low levels, the amount of nicotine delivered to the smoker becomes insufficient, to sustain addiction and the game changer aspect of this kind of ruling is that there will be reduced addiction because we know that nicotine is the addictive drug that keeps people smoking. The main work in the cigarette is to keep people addicted to the product. So, imagine that if 80-90 of people started smoking when they were teenagers, youre going to take off that number, or really reduce it drastically. Another proposal is the ban on flavours, because research has shown that young people get drawn to these products, because of their flavours.
