Family Outraged As Limpopo Education Is Silent Amid Learner Suicide

family outraged as limpopo education is silent amid learner suicide

The family of a Grade 12 learner at Kgabo Secondary School in Mokgokong village, outside Polokwane in Limpopo, who committed suicide in October last year, is outraged and frustrated by the Education Departments continued silence on the matter.

Joseph Maimela committed suicide amid allegations that bullying by some teachers may have contributed to his decision to take his own life.

It is alleged that his progress report card was posted and made public to the entire school community by some of the teachers at his school.

Maimelas sister Annah Maimela says the department has not given them any feedback.

Our biggest concern as a family is that the department has not provided us with any feedback or updates on what is happening regarding our pursuit of justice. We buried our child in October last year, yet they never came to talk to us or provide updates on any progress regarding accountability for those affected. We have sought legal counsel and have family representation, but the problem lies in the departments lack of transparency, sending us from pillar to post.
