Today marks five years since South Africa went into a lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic . In an unprecedented move, businesses and schools were ordered to close and South Africans were told to stay at home to prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

To honour those who lost their lives to COVID-19 a remembrance event will be hosted at Durbans North Beach at 19:30 pm.

Dental surgeon and filmmaker, Dr Eubulus Timothy, who is part of organising the event says it is important for people to join together in a moment of reflection and solidarity.

"We lost so many people during COVID, we lost friends and loved ones, colleagues and how many of our doctors passed away and we have never had closure. A lot of people are still struggling with the fact that they never had closure for the loss of their loved ones, so we want this to be a time of remembrance, to salute those that we have lost."
