Eskom Saved R16 Billion In Reduced Diesel Usage Electricity Minister

Eskom Saves R16 Billion in Diesel Costs Amid Reduced Load Shedding

Eskom has successfully saved approximately R16 billion this year by cutting down on its diesel usage. Last year, the power utility spent around R30 billion burning diesel through open gas turbines to manage heavy load shedding and keep the lights on.

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa highlighted the significant savings, stating that Eskom had managed to reduce diesel consumption, leading to savings of R16.6 billion compared to a similar period in the previous year.

However, Ramokgopa also noted that there has been a rise in diesel usage since the start of December. "While we've saved R16.6 billion by reducing diesel use, we have observed an increase in its consumption from December 1st to the 19th," he said. This increase in diesel use comes as Eskom continues to manage the ongoing energy demands and challenges.
