Endangered Cape Gannets See Highest Population In Nearly Two Decades

The endangered seabird population of the Cape gannet colony at Lamberts Bay Bird Island has reached a population of 45 000, which broke a 19-year record, marking an increase in birdlife.

The island, which is home to one of the most thriving seabird populations, saw the increase of the Cape gannet colony due to daily monitoring, patrols, management techniques and a commitment to conserving the delicate ecosystem.

This is according to Dr Ashley Naidoo, CapeNature CEO.

The increased population has also been indicative of ocean health in the area of the island, with Bird Island being the only gannet colony in the world a person can walk to, according to News24 .

The colonys numbers have remained consistently in the range of the 30 000s, over the past five years.
