The Economic Freedom Fighters EFF has vowed to block President Cyril Ramaphosa from accepting Joel Pollak as the next US ambassador to South Africa.

The South Africa-born Pollak is the editor-at-large of US conservative news publication Breitbart .

On Friday 14 March, he authored the article US Secretary of State Marco Rubio relied on to announce the expulsion of Ebrahim Rasool as South Africas ambassador to the US.

He was considered a contender to be US envoy to Pretoria in 2017 during President Donald Trumps first term in office, according to Daily Maverick . However, Trump eventually nominated Lana Marks in 2018.

With Trumps return to office in January, Pollak has seemingly resumed lobbying for the position, which is vacant following the resignation of Reuben E. Brigety II in January.

In a statement on Rasools expulsion , EFF labelled Pollak as a white supremacist, race baiter who works for Breitbart , which is well known for spreading racist and xenophobic views in the US.

If Pollak is appointed, we will make sure that President Ramaphosa does not sign his letters of credence and ban him from entering South Africa, the party said.

In recent weeks, Pollak has had interviews with local media outlets, including eNCA and BizNewsTV . In line with the Trump administrations stance, he has been outspoken against South Africas foreign policy positions on Israel and Iran on his X profile.

In his interview with BizNewsTV , he claimed the White House was considering sanctions against Ramaphosa and the African National Congress for their conduct.

Pollak also met civil society groups AfriForum and Solidarity during their recent visit to Washington.
