Education Dept Recovers Over R21 Million From Infrastructure Project

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says the department has recovered an overpayment of more than R21 million for one of its infrastructure projects.

This overpayment occurred in the 2022/23 financial year.

Gwarube answered a written Parliamentary question - on whether she has discovered financial mismanagement when it comes to building new infrastructure or maintaining existing buildings.

She says the department contracts implementing agents to build the necessary infrastructure and in the event of any delays or corrective action that is needed, the cost is for the account of the relevant implementing agent.

She added that the department does regular site visits to ensure that progress reported by the implementing agents is in accordance with contractual obligations.
