eastern cape women in construction seek government intervention

Women in the construction industry in the Eastern Cape say that they want more intervention from government on many issues they find within the sector.

A Women in Built Environment Colloquim is being hosted by the provincial Department of Public Works, Infrastructure and Human Settlement in Makhanda.

It is part of ongoing efforts to transform the construction and property industry, to enable women to penetrate the sector.

Weziwe Zondani, who is in construction, says that the gap between higher education and the work force is far too large.

We find that there are students that come out of higher learning institutions but when they come to places of employment, they dont know what they are expected to do. And yes, we understand that some of the implementing agents they take them for internships but you find out that from that internship they know nothing. They are just giving them a stipend and we dont know if they are just sending them to go buy bread or what. But when they come to the construction firm now, they dont know where to start.
