Easier Access To Sex Offenders Register Will Help Keep Kids Safe

Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says making it easy for schools and early childhood development centres to access the National Register for Sex Offenders would help to keep children safe .

The register includes names of convicted sex offenders and is expected to be made accessible to the public without the need to apply.

Currently, more than 32 500 sex offenders are on the register.

Kubayi has vowed to ensure that schools and early childhood development centres can access the register without hurdles.

I have said to the team the current method of accessing the register is inefficient and ineffective where a certificate needs to be applied for, and it takes long to get it and it depends whether a school or an early development centre did apply. Which means that many of our children are at the risk of being in the hands of a sex offender, some of them are repeat offenders and can continue to do it, Kubayi says.
