The South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) has embarked on a pivotal partnership with the Durban University of Technology (DUT) to advance green hydrogen research .

This collaboration focuses on producing green hydrogen from borehole water and aims to propel South Africa towards a low-carbon economy.

Professor Sampson Mamphweli, head of SANEDIs Energy Secretariat, says the project not only aligns with South Africas Green Hydrogen Roadmap but also promises to stimulate local economic growth and support the countrys Just Energy Transition.

On the economic growth, in general you are looking at an investment of around R300 billion in the hydrogen economy from now to about 2050. That includes projects that will produce hydrogen for the export market and the projects that will produce hydrogen for the local use and all that will come with a lot of jobs. Once these green hydrogen facilities are established, they will then have to be run for about 20 to 30 years, says Mamphweli.
